We are a private human capital development company that targets Nigerian youth. Our goal is to advance a wide-diversified education system, instrumental in contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth by way of suitable manpower production, relevant to the needs of industry, society and changing technological work environment. We hope to achieve this through advocacy interventions, training, consulting and research projects.
Labour market statistics indicate that actual youth unemployment is estimated to be 42% in Nigeria and rising, with an estimated 1.8m graduates seeking jobs annually. When juxtaposed with employer’s feedback that majority of educated employees lack the required skills to get their work done. This portends a significant national skills shortage and an apparent inability of our existing educational institutions in addressing this issue. Hence, the strategic need to scale existing models and lessons learnt from the pioneering effort. This approach needs to be delivered in a cost efficient manner, with due consideration to limited resource availability. Our strategic “Top of Pyramid” approach is to implement this at the tertiary education level; this approach will encourage collective responsibility and seamless implementation at scale.
Against the backdrop of high unemployment even amongst educated youth globally, it is our belief at the Skills Development practice that increasing the level of education of the emerging workforce in developing economies will not in itself ensure an easy absorption into non-vulnerable jobs. It is equally evident that continuing to push forth undereducated, under skilled youth into the labour market is a no-win situation, both for the young person who remains destined for a hand-to-mouth existence based on vulnerable employment and for the economy which gains little in terms of boosting its labour productivity potential. Our mandate therefore is to….
